Snowcapades

2008  Cub Scout Snow Capades
Saturday, February 7th

Meet at Hoover at 7:00 am to car pool.  If you are driving you must have a Snow Park Permit!!

Have extra show clothes you can lend?  Contact a Pack Leader.

Snow Capades is held at Camp McLoughlin at Lake of the Woods between Klamath Falls and Medford.  The camp is at almost 5,000 feet and experiences winter conditions which are ideal for fun in the snow.  The fun includes:  Fire building at Fairbanks, Iditarod, Gold Rush, Avalanche Express, Eskimo Express, Snowball Express, Glacier Glide and Snow shoeing.  These events translate to saucers, snowshoes, roasting marshmallows, zip lines and much more.  A hot lunch is served in our winterized dining hall.  Cubs receive a winter segment and the Pack receives a ribbon.

The cost is $10.00 per adult and $15 per youth.  Fathers, mothers, siblings and potential Cub Scouts are invited.  Children must be 5 years of age or older to attend, however.  No dogs please.

Everyone must Pre-register with the Pack.  Registrations start at the November Pack Meeting (Scouting for Food).

Check-in begins at 8:00 am at Camp McLoughlin.  That is why we are leaving at about 7:00 am.  Events begin at 9:00 am...  We will meet at Hoover at 7:00 am.

Come Prepared:

  • HAVE FUN

  • It is required that bike helmets be worn on all saucer runs!!

  • Earn a winter segment

  • The hike into camp is about 1/2 mile (30 minutes each way).

  • We recommend you bring bicycle helmets to be worn on saucer runs.

  • Minimum of one adult for every five youth attending.  We must provide the adult supervision.

  • Do not bring small items unless they are attached to a belt loop or pack.  That includes keys.  If anything small is dropped in the snow, it may not be found until spring!

  • All the events are designed for Cub Scouts and families.

Sledding:

For safety, sledding will only be allowed on designated runs.  Please leave your sleds and saucers at home.  Snowcapades will provide the saucers.  Again, we require bike helmets be worn on all saucer runs.

Have a State of Oregon Sno-Park Permit.  These can be obtained for a small fee at the Council Service Center, most sporting goods stores or the DMV.  Parking will be at the Summit Parking Lot which is 2.5 miles west of camp on Highway 140 (milepost 32.5).  A shuttle bus will take everyone to and from the camp entrance.  Then there is a 30 minute walk, over snow, to the camp.

Keep everyone dry and hydrated.  You don't want them cold, cranky and, if dehydrated, with a headache.

Snowcapades is a lot of fun.
